First, let me just say how happy it makes me feel to read your uplifting comments on the blog - sometimes we just feel so alone and isolated here but when we read these comments it brings us so much comfort.
Lizzie still isn't "Lizzie" yet, but she had a few moments today that made me think, "she's coming back."
Lizzie has always been a tad bit bossy...must be the red hair or the fact she's the oldest daughter...anyhow, she has never been able to tolerate kids acting really crazy or crying a lot - she is fairly mild and calm most of the time - the little boy in the room next door to us was screaming bloody murder today and Lizzie was trying to get out of bed. I asked her what she was doing and she said, "I want to see if that is Madilyn, Brecklin or Kennedy screaming" (all cousins that are a little more prone to screaming than others).
I explained to her that it was a sick little boy and that she needed to stay in bed and that others are taking care of him. After a few minutes of screaming, she turns to me and says, "That kid is such a weirdo"...after a few more minutes she says, "Shush it kid, I hate your screaming" and after a few more "You are the grumpiest kid." It felt good to laugh even though I felt bad for the little one next door.
Lizzie has always been quite into fashion. Today after I got dressed, she said, "Mom, are those new pants? I really like the back pockets" - it was funny.
Please know that we are not just sitting around depressed. We feel very hopeful and very peaceful...especially after getting sleep last night.
A few people have asked these questions and I thought I would write on the blog if others are wondering:
Did Lizzie have her head shaved? - No, thank goodness since she loves her hair - they only shaved a 1/2 inch strip of hair beginning at her temple on the right side and continuing down in a letter "c" shape towards her right ear. Her hair will grow in around the scar and the way we part her hair will completely cover her scar except for a little at the temple. I know that seems so silly to worry about, but Lizzie would have been devastated to lose her hair (this is what her little friends were most worried about too...I love how little girls minds work).
Is her head all bandaged up? No - The wound is completely stitched/stapled up and has no bandage whatsoever. It doesn't bleed and looks to be a very tight stitch - it's not scary or gross to look at (at least for us). Her head still has a drainage tube coming out of it for at least a few more days to get the rest of the fluid out that had built up on her brain.
She is on 6 medications and is still completely shaking. She tries to eat by herself, but her brain is not quite communicating to her hand as to where the utensil should go. We feel that with therapy she will be able to relearn all these necessary things. She is acting very independent, even more so than before her surgery. She tries to stand on her own (but can't yet) and she wants to get out of bed to visit when we tell her that visitors have come.
She seems to be in her own little world most of the time. One good sign today was that she asked to wear her new pajamas that some sweet friends brought her yesterday. I was so thankful she remembered and we got them out and they fit perfectly and were so cozy for her. I feel like people are so inspired for the little things they are bringing for her. This same group of friends brought some bracelets for her to wear - this was also so perfect because her hands are just so busy right now and this gave her something to keep her hands busy with rather than tugging on cords. She keeps yanking on cords saying, "these necklaces are bugging me."
She still is having hallucinations, but they're not as bad. Today she thought Calli was there and she said, "Hi, do you want some of my bacon, babe?" Last night she swore up and down that Spencer was there and she wanted to talk to him.
Overall things are so very good, we just feel happy that our other little ones are being taken care of and that we can focus our energies on Lizzie.
Thank you once more for your sustaining prayers - we feel them minute by minute and feel like we can call upon them when we are feeling sad.

We are so glad to hear there are little positive changes with Lizzie each day. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers constantly. When I think of you I hear this Primary song "I'll Follow Him in Faith:"
"The Lord has blessed me with gospel truth. I have learned His ways in my early youth. I will share my light for I know it's right To testify of Him.
The Lord has blessed me with simple faith. If I pray for help, He will give me strength. I will do His work. I will gladly serve. I'll follow Him in faith.
The Lord has blessed me to feel His love. I have felt His promptings and learned to trust. So in all I do, I'll be faithful to The things I know are true. The Lord has blessed me in many ways. With a thankful heart I will sing His praise. I will raise my voice and proclaim my choice To follow Him in faith. He has shown the way, and through all my days, I'll follow Him in faith."
Your family has been through so much and you have so much faith and hope. You are a great example to follow. We love you and we will continue to pray for sweet Lizzie.

What??!! Madilyn's a screamer? We're working on that. ;) Calli is here today and she is busily playing with the little Cheveron cars we have...the only boy toys we own...she must have a brother or something. She is happy and content and I know the Lord is blessing her.
Carol and Ben I am amazed at the faith you guys have. I know that your lamps were full before this happened and your faith will carry you through this. I love you both!

Carol - I am Tausha's friend, Nancy. She told me about Lizzie and what has been going on and sent me to your blog. I am so sorry for this scary time and at the same time am so uplifted by your strength and positive attitude. My thoughts and prayers will be with you!
We read your blog all the time as a family and we all laugh and cry and pray for Lizzie and your awesome family. Last night all our kids prayed that Lizzie could get some rest. We are happy when we hear of Lizzie's improvements and her little spunkiness comming back. We have wanted to come and visit but we didn't know if the timing was right. What are your thoughts? What are the hospital rules about visitors?
We love ya!

Wow, you guys are amazing and I am so glad that she is improving daily. Thanks for keeping the blog updated...we are so interested to see what is going on and to be able to be a support even though we can't be there. Jenner asked me what Lizzie looks like because we keep saying her name in our prayers. Love and hugs to you all....Wendy & the Ryan Family

I am so completely impressed with you and your attitude. You are a powerhouse and I know your strength will help Lizzie preserver. You are such a great example. I am praying for lizzie and it seems like she is making some huge steps. I hope she is able to get well enough soon to come home. I was really laughing about her comments about the Grumpy kid! She sounds so cute!
Ben and Carol,
My thoughts are with you always. I can imagine how difficult this time is for you and your family. Thank you for the continued updates. It helps to know what's going on so I don't worry so much. Stay the course. Things have a way of making sense, maybe not at first, but some time.

Let me just start by saying that Lizzie is the darn root tootin' cutest thing ever and I think it really stinks that she has to go through this. That being said I am amazed by the strength of your cute family. I follow the blog every day to hear of the progress of little Lizzie bug. Cade has a special place in his heart for Lizzie and always tells me at church that Liz is his friend. We are keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers. Hang tough and try the hospital's choc chip/ coconut cookies. They are worth every calorie:)
Oops sorry. That last comment was from the Maughan family:)
I LOVE the cute and funny lil' things she says! Lizzie has been through more than a child should at her young age. It's very evident your family has been in thy watchful care through out all of this. And you guys sharing these lil' miracle's with us, your spirit shines through and touches my families heart strings very deeply! Abbie was so excited to pick out her jammies for her!! See you ALL tomorrow ;)
Love & Hugs,
The Julian Family
It's so nice to hear you got some sleep. I understand how scary it is to watch someone you love so much be so confused. Chad's fever caused him to hallucinate for a couple of days in the hospital. He was certain he was flying an F16.LOL! I had to hold him down and keep his oxygen on him for hours. We laugh about it now, but at the time it was terrifying to me. All the things she's experiencing sound so familiar to what we went through, and everything turned out okay in the end. One day she'll just take a turn for the better and you'll finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I pray that that day comes soon for all of you. You're in our prayers every day.
Hey cute Huffs!!! Just want you to know we continue to think of you and pray for you. When Bri's friend broke his neck last year and we spent time at the hospital in Colorado, the 3rd floor was for spinal cord injuries, however the second floor was for head trauma. We were always nervous when the elevator stopped at the 2nd floor cuz you never knew what you were going to get! It sounds like Lizzie is right on coarse! Your stories are so cute . . . it just makes us want to give all of you a big hug!!! The girls were begging me to run down yesterday, however we don't want to intrude! Chris and I will be down that way tomorrow (Sat) if you are up for a short visit we would love to stop by. Let us know. We could bring anything from home you are missing! Have a great day and keep your chin up! You are amazing!!!! Love, The Gardiner Gang
